Day 1 in the Can, I'm Nobody's Biggest Fan, Are You Sure You're a Man?

So it's just after midnight, Tootsie is snoring softly and contentedly in a comfy chair, and I'm back from a session at the tables that provided decidedly mixed results.  I'm a little tired so I'll leave the snark behind and just go over a few key hands.

Key Hand 1: Second hand overall. AhKh. Raised PF, called by seat 2.  Seat 2 checks flop blind.  I bet out maybe 2/3 pot.  Snaps. Turn a fourth high card.  I bet around 35, get snapped again. River brings a 10 that gives me Broadway. Seat 2 checks dark again, I bet huge, he calls, I win.  I haven't sat down for five minutes and I'm up $133.

KH2: KK. It was raised to me to 12, I re-raise to 35. Two callers.  Ace comes up on flop, bet and raise in front of me. I weep a little for the hardness of the world and fold.

KH3: A7s00ted, raised in front of me. Called enthusiastically. Whiff the flop, cbet, take it anyway.

KH4: 1010. Raise pre.  Flop KKA.  Someone bets in front of me. Foldyroo.

KH5: KK. Raised to 6. I re-raise to 25. Two callers.  K on flop. I bet big with shaky hand and I swear to god I think my penis came out of my pants.  Everyone folds.  I curse myself.

KH6: KK yet again.  I raise big. Seat 10, whom I honestly do not know is male or female, calls with J8.  Turns a straight. I hate s/him.  This one lost me a lot of money.

KH7: J10.  Raise, 1 caller. J on flop.  Bet, call.  Turn, bet, call.  Starting to get spooked.  River is check check.  He has me outpipped with JQ. Lost a lot of money on this one too.

KH8: AQh. raise, 1 caller.  Flop comes AQ7.  bet, raise, shove, call.  He has a set of 7's.  I rant a little bit, not at him but at the world in general. At this point I'm down to about $90.

KH9: AA UTG. Raise to 6. Folded around to seat 2 (a different guy from hand 1). He raises to 15. Shove, call.  AA holds up and the Kid is BACK BABY!!

There were a few small wins after that, but I realized that it was almost 1:00 AM and I was turning Tootsie into a poker widow.  I colored up my white chips, toked the dealer and tipped my cap.  Final Day 1 tally: up $26.  Not the best day but it beats a sharp stick to the eye.

One downer, on my AA hand, as it was running, he turns over his KK and with a knowing look, says to me, "aces?" I nod with what I hoped was sympathy and said, "sorry.  Well, not really, but you know what I mean." And I realized that that was a pretty shitty thing to say.  And for some reason rather than immediately apologizing and saying that I didn't intend to sound like a jackass, I just said nothing - so he's the guy who's not my biggest fan I mentioned in the title to this post.

Will keep y'all posted about Day 2 when it's done.  Meantime, stay cool mah brothers and sisters.

  1. That's not a bad comment.. it's what anyone would say "Sorry about the cooler, but happy to win". I gotta say the guy you played against with the AK hand who let you catch up was a pussy and deserved to lose. He had you beat on the flop and turn and if he pops you anywhere then he wins. Morons playing poker. It is a good thing for you!

On the down side... stop falling in love with top pairs? Actually you did not tell us the exact betting amounts on the massive hands like top pair ten kicker... but it sounds like you fell in love and just could not let them go.

All in all looks solid though.

    1. Yeah, that one exposed a hole in my game, if you're talking about the J10 losing to JQ. I played the hand for the same reason I play 24 - it's associated with some other outside reason that's not pure poker, in this case the Right Reverend Josie Feeny and the J10 boogie-woogie. But by the time the turn came out, I realized I likely didn't have a winner and stopped donating - however late in the game that was.

But you know actual pocket pairs, I dumped KK twice before it could do damage and was able to shitcan 1010 before I got in any kind of trouble, but KK bit me in the ass twice, as it can certainly do.

So yeah, just like you said: all in all, not bad, maybe a B/B- overall, with a few moments of stupidity.

Just a ritualistic comment. Doesn't mean anything one way or the other and surely he knows that.

    1. Man, I hope so. Maybe because he was forking over a hailstorm of chips but I thought I could see a flash of pissed-offingness in his face when I said that. That bothered me for hours, actually. I would hate to be a person known for being caustic in victory.

BTW I just realized that after all this time somehow I haven't yet linked to your blog. This will be rectified right away.

  3. Gary - how are the rooms at the Sun? We stayed once at Foxwoods but never there.

    1. surprisingly nice - and the food is singularly praiseworthy. Notwithstanding any success or failure at the tables, the trip was a success from all other perspectives. It might be worth a post all by itself!

  4. I may or may not have drawn several weird looks from my co-workers today when I laughed uncontrollably at this:

"KK. Raised to 6. I re-raise to 25. Two callers. K on flop. I bet big with shaky hand and I swear to god I think my penis came out of my pants."

I'm a 44-year old man with the comedic sensibilities of a 7th grader. Sue me.

    1. Hey - I'm not suing you, I'm the one who made the joke!

Say what you like about Howard Stern, but when he was on the radio he called his show "50,000 watts of fifth-grade fun." I've never heard a better description of what I think is funny.

    2. Was the k-high flop draw heavy (why did you bet big)?

    3. I bet big because "the book" says to push your sets, that over the long haul the EV play is not to check made sets on the flop. It seems counterintuitive but people whose opinions I respect tell me the math is right for dealing with sets aggressively.

  5. Honestly no offense, but the Bruins blew it tonight. I am happy for the caps. Bye Bye Bruins. I love it.

    1. I think it says a lot about the character of a person that they take such obvious glee in kicking somebody when they're down. I have blocked/unfriended more people on Twitter and Facebook because they chirped at me like that right after a stinging loss by one of my favorite teams. A classy fan enjoys their own team's victory (or their own victory in poker) without rubbing their opponent's nose in the loss.

Your response, Gary, was much more reserved and diplomatic than mine would have been.

    2. Sorry man. I was a little drunk when I wrote that last night. Way to soon. My apologies. I wasn't trying to be a dick.

    3. Grouse, thank you - you're a gentleman. And JT, I have forgiveness in my heart because I don't know how I'd react if the Yankees were involved in a similar situation. Which would be weird because the Yankees would be playing hockey, but whatever man...

  6. Please join me in NHL depression. This season ended waaaaay too early.

  7. If I get someone with a hand like you got your AA in against the KK, I nod knowingly and tap the table (with that 'good hand' pat)...
